During the week of June 26-July 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI.

During the week of June 26-July 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI.

Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21 years old.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 15; Puna, five; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 581 DUI arrests compared with 549 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.8 percent.

There have been 692 major accidents so far this year compared to 741 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.

To date, there have been 20 official traffic fatalities, compared with 12 official fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 66.7 percent for official fatalities. There also have been four traffic deaths police don’t count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
